National Parks and Game Reserves in Kwa-Zulu Natal
Abu Madi is ideally situated close to excursions
into the nearby National game reserves of Mkuze, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, Ndumo,
St. Lucia wetland park, Pongolo Nature Reserve and Jozini dam, as well
as Thembe elephant park and also sodwana for the diving enthusiasts.
Ideal for a day excursion include:
- Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. Where the 'Big Five' roam over a vast
area of 96,000 ha is only a 45 minute drive away.
- Mkuze Game Reserve, the Fig Forest and Nsumo Pan are on Abu Madi's
doorstep. Excellent viewing of hippos, crocodiles and black rhino.
- Tembe Elephant Park is only about 1 ½ hour's drive from Abu Madi and
is said to be home to the largest single herd of elephants in South
Africa - numbering at the present time 140 elephants.
- Ndumo Game Reserve is best known for it's incredible birdlife and
a great day trip for keen birders. Also only approx 1-½ hours drive,
Ndumo has many pans, extensive wetlands and reed beds that attract the
aquatic birds. Close to Tembe, guests in a hurry could enjoy both the
elephants and the birds in one day!
- The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park consists of large lakes and waterways
along the coastal plain fringing the Indian Ocean. A 5 km marine reserve
extends for 155 kms along the coast.
- Pongolo Nature Reserve, home to black and white rhino, has habitat
favoured by the Suni antelope. and Jozini Dam is 1½ hour's north of
Abu Madi.
- Jozini has several species of fish, including the tiger-fish - "the
fiercest, fresh-water fighting fish in the world". Fishermen converge
from all over South Africa for the popular fishing competitions held
throughout the year.
