Traditional Zulu culture

The Zulu nation is a proud and historically fascinating one. The owners of Abu Madi feel honored to be amongst these people and to share knowledge of their culture with guests.

Abu Madi faces the imposing Ghost Mountain, known as 'Tshaneni' by the Zulu people. A sacred burial place, the mountain has been the scene of a number of decisive battles over the past centuries. Legend has it that Ghost Mountain is haunted.

Visits can be made to several local historical and cultural villages, learning about the traditional way of life. Samgomas, with their ancient craft of traditional healing lead an important part in every day life.

Zulu beads, so intricately and exquisitely worked, can be purchased in a number of forms - baskets, jewellery, tableware etc., as well as woodcarvings, pottery and all shapes and sizes of reed and grass basketry.

DUMAZULU TRADITIONAL VILLAGE

Situated near Hluhluwe, DumaZulu is within easy reach of Abu Madi. Opened by King Goodwill Zwelithini, visitors can learn the authentic and traditional way of spear and shield making, watch beading and pot making and see how the local beer is brewed, whilst having the Samgoma throw the bones. A variety of Zulu dances end this unique experience.

ST LUCIA VILLAGE

Here one can visit the fascinating crocodile farm or take a boat cruise on the estuary amongst the hippo's and crocodiles as well as visit a traditional zulu village.
